French Napoleon III onyx and ormolu portico mantel clock garniture

Fine French Napoleon III green onyx and ormolu three-piece clock garniture, c.1890. The architectural portico case is mounted with gilt bronze ornament and surmounted by a classical female mask. The clock has a painted enamel dial, visible mercury-style pendulum, and an eight-day French movement striking on a coiled gong. Complete with matching pair of covered onyx and ormolu urns.

Style: The clock is in the Louis XVI Revival / Napoleon III style, with four polished onyx columns supporting the case.

Material: Made from green banded onyx (often called Algerian or Mexican onyx in the antiques trade) with gilt bronze (ormolu) mounts.

Movement: It has a French eight-day movement with a visible mercury-style pendulum and coiled gong strike, indicating it strikes.

Dial: White enamel dial with hand-painted floral garlands and ornate gilt hands, typical of quality French clocks from the late 19th century.

Garniture: The matching pair of covered urns (cassolettes) means this is a three-piece clock garniture, which is more desirable than the clock alone.

Decoration: The gilt female mask at the top is another common decorative feature of French mantel clocks from this period

Antique Country House Reception Post Box

A Rare and Original Country House Reception Post Box

This impressive antique Country House Reception Post Box is a wonderful survivor from the late Victorian or early Edwardian period. Originally positioned in the entrance hall or reception area of a large country house, manor, hotel, or prestigious office, it provided an elegant and practical way to receive daily correspondence and telegrams.

Beautifully made in solid oak with rich colour and patina developed over many decades, the post box retains its original brass "LETTERS" and "TELEGRAMS" plaques, curved glazed front, and traditional brass fittings. Its distinctive design reflects the quality of craftsmanship associated with fine English cabinet making of the period.

A Practical Piece of Postal History

Before modern mail rooms and reception desks became commonplace, country houses often had dedicated post boxes where servants collected letters delivered by the village postman. The separate compartment for telegrams reflects a fascinating period in communication history, when urgent messages were delivered by telegraph and treated differently from ordinary correspondence.

The glazed front allowed staff to quickly see whether post had arrived without opening the cabinet, while the lockable door kept important letters secure until they were collected by the household.

Exceptional Craftsmanship

Constructed from solid English wood, this post box displays all the characteristics expected of a quality period piece:

Original curved glass front

Solid oak construction

Original brass "LETTERS" and "TELEGRAMS" name plates

Brass pull knob and hinges

Attractive rich colour and untouched patina

Functional interior storage compartment

Elegant curved design throughout

The quality of the timber and the precision of the joinery suggest it was commissioned for a prestigious property where both appearance and durability were equally important.

A Decorative Statement Piece

Today, this unusual antique makes a striking decorative feature in a wide variety of interiors. Whether displayed in a country home, boutique hotel, period office, or private collection, it is certain to become a conversation piece.

It would also make a superb addition to:

Country house interiors

Hallways and reception rooms

Boutique hotels

Historic properties

Antique furniture collections

Interior design projects

Film and television productions

Condition

The post box remains in very good antique condition, displaying the honest wear expected from over a century of use. The wood has acquired a beautiful deep patina, while the original brass fittings have mellowed naturally with age. Minor marks and wear simply add to its authenticity and character.

A Rare Collector's Piece

Original country house reception post boxes rarely appear on the market, particularly examples retaining their original fittings and glazed front. Combining practicality, historical interest, and exceptional craftsmanship, this is an increasingly difficult item to source and would make a wonderful addition to any serious collection of unusual antiques or English country house furnishings.
